Transport 2025

TfL have published their Transport 2025 Vision, which included reference to the West Anglia Routes and confirmed the timings of proposed works, with a major works programme running 2016-26.  The timing of the phased programme has been welcomed by the West Anglia Routes Group and it has been agreed that there should be support for the TfL plans.

Transport 2025 (T2025) is a TfL initiative to define a long-term vision for London’s transport system.  It will form the basis for TfL’s Spending Review 2007 submission and also inform revisions to the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.  An initial consultation document - Transport 2025 - Transport Challenges for a Growing City – acknowledged the need to maximise the use of existing resources but also to provide new capacity on the network.

The WARG submitted a response to the T2025 consultation which:

  • Highlighted the importance of the West Anglia Routes in supporting growth
  • Welcomed recognition of the route and proposed schemes
  • Called for significant investment in the routes to a timescale to meet predicted demand (pre 2022)

Following this submission, representatives from the WARG met with TfL to discuss Transport 2025 and plans for developing the West Anglia Routes.  TfL outlined a phased programme of development:

  • To 2011 - High capacity rolling stock and increased train lengths
  • 2016 to 2026 - Two new tracks from Cheshunt to Tottenham Hale and higher service frequencies, particularly via Stratford

Based on the Eastern Rail Corridor Plan estimated costs for the following proposals on the West Anglia routes are:

  • Introduction of higher capacity rolling stock and lengthening of services from 4 to 8 cars on Inner Suburban routes: £179 million.
  • Longer trains on the Outer Suburban routes, up to 12 cars in length: £127 million. (This does not include the cost of platform extensions at Broxbourne.)
  • Four tracking between Broxbourne and south of Tottenham Hale to enable increased inner suburban service frequencies at the stations on the Lea Valley Line and additional services to Stratford: £825 million.
